There’s a great deal to consider while picking a synthetic putting green turf for your backyard than just: Should it be textured yarn or slit-film yarn? While it is important to know which style of yarn to pick, it is equally important to know the manners in which the synthetic turf is fabricated and the kind of infill it contains. Of course, the installation method and base material are crucial to an effective installation, but here are 3 significant considerations while choosing your putting green.
Texturized versus Slit-Film Putting Greens
Texturized or Slit-Film (fibrillated)? This is often a topic for debate. There are numerous advantages and disadvantages to both. One significant point that you might not have previously known about or considered is the fact that texturized yarn comes in two styles, 1) Nylon and 2) Polypropylene. For clarity, when referencing “Texturized” we will be referring to the polypropylene texturized yarn. Both nylon and poly texturized yarns are high quality, however the poly texturized has less issues than the nylon because of its “moisture regain” quality, meaning nylon holds more moisture, leading to greater turf movement, which can be risky.
The Biggest Consideration is whether you’ll be hitting long shots to the backyard putting green. Slit-Film putting greens are better for holding shots from long distances, however it’s not a direct result of the yarn composition, but the Slit-Film putting greens permit more space for infill material that is spread between the yarn fibers during manufacturing. The infill material is what absorbs the ball’s kinetic impact, not the yarn composition. The more infill material in the backyard putting green, the longer the shot it will take. You can in any case hit shots of 30 yards to a Texturized putting green, however, you should include some extra infill material. The problem is that the amount of infill is constrained on Texturized putting greens.
Let’s say you don’t plan on using your backyard putting green for hitting long balls, but only for chipping and putting. Which one is the right choice? This is the million-dollar question! Here are some Pros and Cons for both.
Manufacturing Considerations
Not all synthetic turf is made equal! There are some considerable factors regarding synthetic turf quality.
Texturized Putting Greens: Some Texturized putting greens will show streaks more than others. This is typically a quality issue yet sometimes even the highest caliber Texturized yarn has streak issues. Likewise, Texturized putting greens can have an inconsistent ball roll one way and a perfect roll the other way. Since we have total control over each stage of manufacturing, our putting greens have fewer streaking issues.
The most significant factor while picking a Texturized backyard putting green is the backing. Since Texturized putting greens tend to expand and contract – causing puckering and wrinkling – a quality backing is critical! The best choice is a rubberized backing. If you can see the stitches on the underside of a Texturized putting green, this means you lack the additional fortified support you require! If you don’t have strengthened rubber backing, you could experience serious issues, unless you plan on gluing your Texturized putting green to concrete.
A quality Texturized turf item has a higher bulk rate on the material, which makes a denser turf. When the fibers become heated and drawdown, they are nearer together. How do you know whether the item you’re attempting to purchase has a higher bulk rate? The truth is a great deal of the time you can’t know; Ideally, you should purchase a sample and roll the ball on them in all directions to confirm it’s consistent.
Slit-Film Greens: A quality Slit-Film putting green have will sheared tops, which means the ends of the fibers come sheared. Ball roll is always better with sheared tops.
Another factor to consider is the denier of the Slit-Film fiber. The most common denier sizes are 5700 and 7600 deniers. Denier is the bulk measurement of the yarn which is calculated by combining the width and thickness of the yarn fiber. The higher the denier, the bulkier the fiber. The 5700 fiber is softer and will perform better initially. The 7600 denier fiber has a greater “break-in” period but relaxes nicely in the end. There is not much contrast in durability, however. If this turf was being installed in a dog run or play area, the 7600 denier surface may last slightly longer, however, it makes no difference for the light use of a putting green.
Purchase from a Reputable Turf Company! The most significant factor of picking the correct putting green turf is purchasing from a respectable turf company. An organization that stands behind its product!
Infill Considerations
Texturized and Slit-Film both require infill, however, the amount of infill required between the two varies greatly. Texturized putting greens require around 2 pounds per square foot of fine silica sand. This gives the putting green the required weight to enable the turf to hold fast to the base material, particularly over undulations. Since the silica sand sits at the base of the turf, it isn’t noticeable and typically creates no maintenance issues.
Slit-Film putting greens depend on infill. Many turf companies use solely silica sand as their infill, however, we suggest a mix of silica sand with another material that prevents the silica sand from hardening and compacting. We also suggest dyed rounded top dressing sand. Green is the most famous shading, however, black or a mix of green and black top dressing is also common.
Synthetic Grass Tee Lines
Artificial Turf of Texas synthetic tee mats allow a full range of tee placement upon the surface, and in this manner evenly distributes wear. In contrast to a hard-hitting mat, they allow you to hit down and through the ball without the club face skipping off so that “fat shots” are penalized. Requiring no maintenance, our synthetic tee lines are an extraordinary choice for individual golf players needing a hitting area as well as commercial companies for tee boxes and driving ranges.
